Root Veggie Soil (Bags)

$10.00

Per cubic ft. bag (customer picks up)

Root Vegetables Need Different Soil.

Above ground vegetables like tomatoes, leafy greens, and herbs thrive in our high-nutrient compost, but root crops and alliums are the exception. Our new sandy loam root veggie soil is based on extensive research and collaborative testing with other local gardeners.

Grow carrots, beets, radishes, parsnips, in our new 100% low nutrient sandy loam topsoil. Grow potatoes, sweet potatoes, garlic, onions, leeks and other alliums in a blend of low nutrient root veggie soil and our high nutrient compost.

When soil is too rich in nitrogen, root vegetables often grow beautiful leafy tops instead of large, dense roots. Root crops need a leaner, mineral-based growing medium that tells the plant to store energy underground. Loamy, gritty, low nutrient well-drained soil is the growing environment root vegetables evolved in. It gives root veggies the physical structure they need to grow straight, deep and full-sized.

Use this page to order 1 cubic foot bags of Microbe Rich Compost. Delivery is not included. See CUSTOMER PICKUP section for more details.

PhoSul fertilizer is included with soil purchase: Each order comes with a bag of PhoSul, a gentle, low-nutrient phosphorus fertilizer without nitrogen. Add a pinch of PhoSul to each planting hole or spot. Example: Plant 2 to 3 carrot seeds per hole (or spot) to ensure germination, as seeds are tiny and unreliable. When 2 inches tall, thin them, leaving only the strongest single seedling per spot.

Note: Availability is limited during our off season - November 15 to February 28. If ordering during this time, call first to confirm availability.
