Deep Roots is teaming up with Beyond Hunger to bring home grown vegetables to families in need.
Deep Roots Project knows the value of having easy access to nutrient-dense organic produce right outside your door. We are always looking for ways to make vegetable gardening accessible to everyone, especially the food-insecure. We are so excited to be able to offer bucket gardens to Beyond Hunger’s pantry customers this season with the help of your donations!
Each $20 donation to Deep Roots Project between now and the last week of June will allow us to contribute one BPA-free plastic bucket filled with our organic compost and one high-yield food plant, up to our goal of 135 bucket gardens. Luckily, prolific tomato seedling growers like Bob Zeni (Chicago Tomato Man) and Lissa Dysart (Tomato Lady Oak Park) have offered to contribute seedlings to this effort! Reach out to us via to contact form on our website to find out how you can get involved by providing seedlings or manual labor, or click the ”donate” button below to contribute.
“A five gallon bucket can support a dwarf or cherry tomato plant, a cucumber plant or a collection of herbs very well. We will provide some educational materials along with each bucket, and our hope is that by the seasons end, these new growers will be interested in learning how to use that one cubic foot of compost to keep growing some of their own food in years to come. There is a small barrier to entry that we are trying to address, but growing food is a huge way that communities can work to address food insecurity.” Says Lindsey Rauba, Deep Roots Project Educational Coordinator.
Several donations have already come in to support this effort, and we thank our wonderful Deep Roots community for helping to spread the word! Keep Beyond Hunger in mind to receive donations of your extra garden produce this growing season.
